A grieving father won a nearly 11 million dollar verdict against a Kansas church that pickets military funerals. Albert Snyder of York, PA sued the Westboro Baptist Church for unspecified damages after members demonstrated at the March 2006 funeral of his son, Marine Lance Corporal Matthew Snyder who was killed in Iraq. Church members routinely picket funerals of military personnel killed in Iraq and Afghanistan carrying signs such as THANK GOD FOR DEAD SOLDIERS. A number of states have passed laws regarding funeral protests and Congress has passed a law prohibiting such protests at federal cemeteries.

On a related note, the Patriot Guard which is a Military Veteran Motorcycle organization is now routinely arriving at Military funerals and take up positions in front of any protesters with large American Flags so that the family and friends of the deceased member are not harassed.

I don't think it was about the money. This was a case where the demonstrators should have known better and the father proved in court that they were trying to make his son's death about their cause. Families of those wounded or killed in the war should not have to suffer a second time at the hands of protestors. Again, I don't believe for a minute it was about the money. The leader of this protest made a bad choice and this will hang over their heads for quite a while.

I agree Fran, all parties knew that the Church group has no assets. There needs to be a clear signal sent out that this type of twisted behavior cannot be tolerated!
